Holidays in Summer

HIKING, MOUNTAIN HIKING, ROCK CLIMBING, BIKING, WHITEWATER RAPIDS, PANNING FOR GOLD, AND MORE

In summertime, enjoy the cloud dynamics swirling above the Grossglockner summit. Do yourself a favour: hike across the lush, green high alpine pastures bursting with radiant wildflowers. Savour views of marmottes, perhaps spot an eagle, bearded vulture, some chamoix, deer or other inhabitants of the Alps on the mountain flanks in the heart of the national park. After a fulfilling hike, plan a stopover at a mountain refuge with your family to enjoy a tasty Carinthian-style snack.

Walking & Hiking Trails

in Heiligenblut am Großglockner

A step-by-step discovery of the miracles of nature in the largest conservation area of the Alps: the Hohe Tauern National Park and the mountain range that gave it its name, are an El Dorado of walking and hiking trails for any level of ability. Despite the impressive appearance of the alpine landscape, there are also plenty of more gentle routes. In fact, a hike at a leisurely pace, with plenty of time to take in the views of the surrounding summits, may be one of the best ways to experience the Hohe Tauern mountains.

We join our mountain guide at the Salmhütte mountain lodge, the faces in our group filled with tense anticipation. The trek starts out at a leisurely pace. Several climbing passages and a short glacier-crossing later, we reach the Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte – our shelter for the night.

Wild & Still Waters

in Heiligenblut am Grossglockner

Water is a very special element, and plays an important part in the Hohe Tauern National Park. The forms it takes are manifold: as rain from the skies it is life-giving, but not always welcome; in the winter, it transforms as it dances from the heavens, and covers our region in a blanket of white snow. Yet it also plunges down the mountainsides, untamed and wild, rushes through the gorges and ravines, and lays itself across the peaks of our highest mountains as eternal ice.
