A step-by-step discovery of the miracles of nature in the largest conservation area of the Alps: the Hohe Tauern National Park and the mountain range that gave it its name, are an El Dorado of walking and hiking trails for any level of ability. Despite the impressive appearance of the alpine landscape, there are also plenty of more gentle routes. In fact, a hike at a leisurely pace, with plenty of time to take in the views of the surrounding summits, may be one of the best ways to experience the Hohe Tauern mountains.

Eye on the prize: perhaps it’s a desire that’s been building for a while. And now your heart is set on standing on the peak of Austria’s highest mountain. We join our mountain guide at the Salmhütte mountain lodge, the faces in our group filled with tense anticipation. The trek starts out at a leisurely pace. Several climbing passages and a short glacier-crossing later, we reach the Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte – our shelter for the night.

Water is a very special element, and plays an important part in the Hohe Tauern National Park. The forms it takes are manifold: as rain from the skies it is life-giving, but not always welcome; in the winter, it transforms as it dances from the heavens, and covers our region in a blanket of white snow. Yet it also plunges down the mountainsides, untamed and wild, rushes through the gorges and ravines, and lays itself across the peaks of our highest mountains as eternal ice.

From the glacier to the sea: long-distance hiking on the Alpe-Adria Trail  

Hiking without borders: An unforgettable hiking journey, from the foot of the 3789 metre-high Grossglockner to the coast of the Adriatic Sea – traversing Carinthia, Slovenia and Italy’s Friuli Venezia Giuli region. At the end of the trail, you find yourself in Muggia, a small harbour town a little south of Triest. In between is the endless sense of freedom of a long-distance hiking adventure.

As we cruise along the smoothly-paved Glockner Bike Path at a leisurely pace, we take the time to look around and survey the incredible mountain landscape that surrounds us. Earlier this morning, we took our bikes on a bus to the upper part of the Moell Valley.
